Monte San Biagio is a small town in the province of Latina, once renowned for its strategic location between Rome and Naples along the Via Appia and the borderline between the state of the Church and Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Precisely because of this characteristic, the area of Monte San Biagio was particularly susceptible to the phenomenon of banditry.
Initially called Monticelli (or Monticello), after the unification of Italy in Monte San Vito was renamed to avoid problems of homonyms with other municipalities on the Peninsula, but due to more homonyms the country took the final name of Monte San Biagio, in honor of the patron saint of the town.
The town is also renowned for its culinary traditions (Monte San Biagio sausage, shrimp Lake Funds, wild asparagus) and for the production of cork and for being the birthplace of the painter Cristoforo Scacco di Verona.
