Monuments The Church of Saint Candida:
The Church of Saint Candida was built in the 1769 according the will of Antonio Winspeare, Major in the Bourbon army, with the collaboration of the Neapolitan architect Francesco Carpi. It was consecrated the 22nd July 1774. In the exterior it is easy to recognize the neoclassical inspiration. Inside are preserved a wooden statue arising to the XVIII cent of the Patron, a picture of the Madonna Assunta of Sebastiano Conca (XVIII cent). The parish church of Ventotene is a designate place in which is possible to buy the indulgence during the jubilee. Duomo street, tel. 0771.85132 The Castle:
The Castle was built in the XVIII cent. and at the beginning the tower had a unique floor. The other two towers were built to accommodate the political prisoners during the fascist period. Nowadays it is the City hall and the Archaeological Museum. Punta Eolo Villa and Giulia Villa:
Punta Eolo Villa and Giulia Villa was the exile place, for the beauty daughter of August. The extension of it was about 300 meter for 100 and it covered the northern side of the island, now called Punta Eolo. Few rare peaces of the walls are still visible. The Roman Port:
The roman port was excavated in the tufa stones, removing about 60.000 cubic meters of materials. Its basin is about 6.800 square meters and after two thousand years it still receives the fishing and for pleasure ships, the New Port in Cala Rossano area receives the commercial ones. The Roman Peschiera:
The Roman Peschiera, excavated in the tufa was used by the Romans as moray fish breeding. It is made up by a behind covered part and an other one without any covering, nowadays used as a natural pool.
